Practical evidence checklist for this issue

Start with the vehicle’s specific repair documentation, market comparables and written insurer explanation rather than a universal loss percentage.

Build a dated evidence file: VIN and options, accident-date mileage, itemized repairs and supplements, before-and-after photographs, vehicle history, calibration or measurement records when applicable, and any insurer calculation. Mark what is verified, what comes from the owner, and what remains uncertain.

How to challenge an unsupported calculation

Ask the insurer to identify its comparison vehicles, data dates, assumptions and adjustment method. Check for mismatched trims, different accident histories, mileage gaps and unexplained condition deductions. A disagreement is strongest when it identifies a specific error and supplies better evidence.

What the appraisal should explain

A useful report identifies the vehicle and loss date, the relevant market, sources considered, how condition and collision history were treated, the limitations of available data, and the reasoning behind the final opinion. A repair estimate alone cannot establish a market-value loss.

What to do next

Keep communications and documents organized, check claim-specific deadlines, and distinguish first-party coverage from a third-party liability claim. Request a document review before paying for a full appraisal. General information is not a guarantee of claim eligibility or payment.
